When Rosaleen was arrested, Lily broke her out of jail. Do you agree or disagree with Lily’s choice? Why? What else could Lily have done to help Rosaleen? What would you have done if you had been in Lily’s shoes?

I don’t really agree with Lily’s choice to break Rosaleen out of jail. It was a pretty dumb idea I think to break her out of jail actually. When she chose to do this she was not only risking Rosaleen getting in more trouble but with that, the police probably would let the men come back and kill her for sure. Also, when she did this she risked herself of getting caught by T-Ray, which would’ve been terrible for her. And if her father didn’t get control of her the police would have, which would’ve probably been better for her though.

Lil could’ve have done other things to get her out also. In reality she didnt even need Rosaleen to come with her to Tiburon but it is understandable that she wanted someone to go with her. And since she doesn’t really have any friends, Rosaleen was her only choice. To get Rosaleen out of jail she could’ve found a trusted adult to get her out, even though those were hard to come by for Lily, and since she was breaking out a black woman it probably wasn’t to high on peoples to do list. Also she possibly could’ve risked waiting for her to get out of jail, but then when they got home her father would’ve known that Rosaleen was in the deal of running away.

If I was in Lily’s position i probably woudn’t have broken her out of jail on my own. I would have had to find someone to help me get her out. If i didn’t do that then I would of just gone to Tiburon by myself.

What compelled Rosaleen to spit on the three men’s shoes? What does it take for a person to stand up with conviction against brutalizing injustice? What do you like best about Rosaleen?

Rosaleen had a few reasons to dump her spit on the mens shoes. All together, the men were heckling her about being blackand fat. They asked each other if they had ever seen someone so black in their life. “Did you ever see one that black?” said the dealer.(pg.32) The other man came back with; “No, and I ain’t seen one that big either.”(pg.32) And that is why she probably dumped her spit on their shoes.

I think it takes some bravery and also some stupidity for Rosaleen to do something like that. You would think that someone could think of something smarter and better to do if they wanted to get back at them for something. She probably didn’t realize that if she didn’t do anything that that could have made the men even more mad. Even if they had been yelling things at her to try and make her mad she knew she would be the one getting in trouble becasuse she’s black.

What I like best about Rosaleen is she won’t ever hesitate to say something; sometimes its dumb what she says but she doesn’t care at all. Another thing i like about her is that she sticks up for herself. When the men were saying stuff to her she didn’t have to say anything to them, but she did speak out with her actions. I also think that she is somewhat of a happy person. I like that because she obviously doesn’t have the best life, but it seems like she accepts what her life is and thats good.
